"We have a phone, and these phones have all these sensors in them. Why couldn't it just know who I was, so I don't need a password? I should just be able to work."

Google aims at putting an end to monotonous task of remembering and entering passwords for each login. It wants better security by making two-factor authentication mandatory. Google will enable users to confirm their identity with just a tap on their smart phone. This will be possible with the two-step verification 2SV as abbreviated by Google. This will be an extra layer of security.
Developers at Google are working on Trust API to ensure safe secure password-free logins for Android users. The Trust API aims to run in background of the device to set the seal on your identity. It will use various biometric indicators such as facial recognition, voice recognition along with typing patterns etc. Factors like this will be used to generate a trust score through Trust API.
Depending upon the trust score it determines if you are the one using your phone at the moment. If it trusts you and your identity on your device, it then enables your login for various accounts without having to enter password manually.
Dan Kaufman added "What we're going to do with this is be able to get rid of the awkwardness of second-factor authentication." With reference to displeasing experience one can have with any extra security measure like multiple stages of passwords and PINs for safe login that exists as of now.
