As one of the celebrated contemporary Nepalese poets Bhupin has his own influence in modern poetry. He has been writing from his hometown Chitwan. He has published poetry collection Supla Ko Hawaaijahaj and fiction Maidaro. Here, The Margin presents his poem "Tamagi/Tama-Kyu" translated by Jitendra Singh.
Tamagi/Tama-Kyu
Towns have abducted your soul
And kept your heartbeat on a chopping block
Country, seeking that faith and heartbeat,
I've come to this village
Where houses exceed the residents
Where fears exceed the protections.
At the front, while my face stood as a question,
Ante, the elderly headman of the village said-
"Young women have been to cities in search of dreams
"Young men have been abroad in search of living
And the elders, holding their spirit,
Are just awaiting deaths in the yard,
This village's warm sweat
Has flowed in the foreign soil
This village's warm blood
Has flowed in the foreign water."
I wondered-
"Who sowed these gloomy plants of Dahlia flowers?
Who trimmed these gardens and farmlands?
Where are the cocks in this village to signal the daybreak?
And where are the Himalayas grinning to awake the village?"
Recalling the youngsters,
Who have taken all the lights of village to abroad,
Ante, the elderly headman of the village said sobbingly-
"If they don’t return before Dahlia withers
and cock crowsat dawn,
Death will come to our beds
We all will die that no one will remain in the village
To attend our funeral!"
I was seeing-
Not gettingto reside in the town for a single night,
The cultures of emotions were entering the village
and,
Tamagi
was being erased from the country's map.
